As a writer, teacher, and consultant for more than sixty years, we have created and articulated the concepts that have made management a field of legitimate academic inquiry and professional practice. Key to the professor’s vision of management is the belief that the most important asset of any organization is its people. The manager’s primary challenge, the professor believes, is to prepare and free phdschool people to perform. The professor’s interest in management extends beyond the scope of traditional business to phdschool include nonprofit organizations and entrepreneurial enterprises. Indeed, the influence of his thinking is so pervasive that he is fairly called the “father of management”.

The Archive contains the life works of this extraordinary thinker and “social ecologist”. This body of work will serve students, managers, scholars, and researchers for generations to come as the works and thoughts of the professor continue to ripple through our intellectual community. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Archive is phdschool to preserve the profound intellectual legacy of the professor and to manage that legacy to the benefit of the scholarly community, the institution and the practice of management as a whole. The Archive’s activities encompass four major initiatives: (1) maintaining and making available the physical archive, known as the “Collection”,

Archive assists in development of courses to be offered as part of the School curricula and elsewhere within the Claremont Colleges. Courses are based in the History of Economic Thought and focus on the professor’s impact on the practice of management and management theory. THE College SCHOLAR The research activities of one or more scholars will be supported to further the professor’s integrative, interdisciplinary approach to writing and teaching. “For nearly half a century the professor has inspired and educated managers-and influenced the nature of business-with his landmark articles phdschool in the Harvard Business Review. One of this century’s most highly regarded students of management, the college has sought out, identified and examined the most important phdschool issues confronting managers, from corporate strategy to management style to social change.
